Eight below | South China Morning Post

Eight Below features the most beautiful and intelligent cast we've seen on screen in months - a team of huskies.

Directed by Frank Marshall, the film - inspired by a true story - tells the adventures of eight sled dogs after they are left behind in the Antarctic.

Paul Walker plays Jerry, a guide and the owner of the dogs. He is ordered by his boss to take meteorologist Davis (Bruce Greenwood) to a remote part of the continent to look for a rare meteor.

The journey proves to be more dangerous than they expected. In the end, they have to rely on the dogs to bring them back to base after Davis falls into frozen water.

But before the injured pair can thank their furry friends, a storm, the biggest in 25 years, hits the continent and everyone evacuates the base, except for the dogs.

The absence of humans immediately livens up the film. Once the canine performers take centre stage, it's impossible to take your eyes off the screen.

The huskies do everything that human actors would do in an icy adventure epic, such as working together as a team in search of food or mourning the death of their teammates. They also show extreme courage, like when they fight a giant seal which looks like a scary alien, thanks to brilliant computer-generated effects.

No wonder Jerry shows more love for his dogs than for his old flame Katie (Moon Bloodgood), a female pilot. The romantic subplot is unnecessary, but it will do no harm at the box office nor for Walker's status as a Hollywood heart-throb.

Animal lovers should prepare for streams of tears when the dogs and humans finally reunite.

Eight Below is an exceptional canine movie that will teach you about loyalty and courage.
